Fabbri, Prof. Paola
Paola Fabbri (born 18.12.1974), PhD in Materials Engineering, is Associate Professor of Materials Science and Technology at the University of Bologna (Italy). She started working at the EU level in 2004, inside the NANOFUNPOLY Network of Excellence (later evolved in European Center of Nanostructured Polymers and Polymer-based Nanocomposite Materials,) funded by FP6 to strengthen the scientific, technological and training excellence in the field of “MultiFunctional Nanostructured Polymers and Polymer-based Nanocomposites”. Since 2007 she is involved in research actions focused on biopolymers and bioplastics. Her collaborations with the industrial plastic sector concretely supports the replacement of traditional fossil-based plastics with sustainable alternatives. She supports industrial bioplastics developers as Scientific Advisor. Her scientific production counts more than 70 original papers published in high impact factor peer-reviewed scientific journals, about 140 presentations at international polymer conferences, and 4 patents on plastics and bioplastic formulations developed in collaboration with industrial partners. She is the UNIBO representative inside the European Bioplastics Association, where she is actively involved in the Working Groups on biobased and biodegradable plastics, as well as in the Task Force on marine biodegradability. She recently leaded one pillar of the BIOSPRI Tender Study on Support to R&I policy in the area of bio-based products and services, commissioned by the European Commission DG-RTD (May 2017-December 2018). For this tender study she coordinated an international team of consultants and was responsible for the implementation of all activites and reporting to the EC for the selection of the “Top 20 most innovative bio-based products currently under development, holding the greatest promises for exploitation in the next 5 to 10 years”.
